Prenatal Care

Prenatal Care
Receiving early and regular prenatal care is important. Initial visits can be scheduled as soon as you have a positive pregnancy test. Lasting about 1 to 1.5 hours, initial visits include a comprehensive health history review, complete physical exam and possible PAP. If any prenatal lab work is needed, this will also take place. HSPBC Nurse Midwives follow pretty much the same schedule that most physicians follow during the prenatal period. After your initial visit, subsequent visits will take place every four weeks until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks until 36 weeks and weekly after 36 weeks until birth. Your care is personal. We connect to our parents with hugs, knowledge and care. At each visit, the following will be completed/assessed:
- Physical and emotional status
- Vital signs including blood pressure and pulse
- Nutrition
- Urine checked
- Fundal Height
- Fetal Heart Tones and Position
- Lab work as needed
- Prenatal Education
As we join together on your birth journey, we all at HSPBC will establish a personal relationship with you and your significant other. It will be wonderful to encourage family/partner participation during prenatal visits and the birth.
We want to make sure you have time to ask questions and develop a relationship with your midwife. This time is for you to address any concerns so we can provide the necessary answers and/or resources you need.
Prenatal yoga (optional), childbirth preparation & parenting classes are recommended for all first-time birth center families. The knowledge and preparation will make a world of difference in your birth experience.
